Caucasian Ovcharkas are primarily found in the independent countries Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, the Russian republics of Kabardino-Balkaria, Dagestan and Kalmykia, the steppe of the northern Caucasus and around Astrakhan. In the South Caucasus the dogs are bulkier, while they are more lightweight, higher on their feet and often short-haired in the Steppes. They combine a great deal of nervous energy with a character typified by strength, balance and calm, as well as an aggressive disposition and natural distrust of strangers. They have very well developed active defense instincts.
There are three varieties of hair, based on the region of origin: The long-haired variety has a longer topcoat. The hair forms a ruff on the neck, fringes and culottes on the back of the legs. The thick coat covers the whole of the tail, making it look thick and bushy. The short-haired variety is covered with a coat of thick, relatively short hairs, without ruff, fringes, culottes or feathering on the tail. The intermediate type is long-haired but without ruff, fringes, culottes or feathering on the tail.
